    LyX

LyX is the first WYSIWYM document processor. LyX is an advanced open source document processor that encourages an approach to writing based on the structure of your documents, not their appearance. LyX lets you concentrate on writing, leaving details of visual layout to the software.LyX runs on many Unix platforms, OS/2, and under Windows/Cygwin (this port requires an X server). LyX project can also run natively on Mac OS X, thanks to the Qt/Mac library.LyX produces high quality, professional output -- using LaTeX, an industrial strength typesetting engine, in the background; LyX is far more than a front-end to LaTeX, however. No knowledge of LaTeX is necessary to use LyX, although it will give a user more power.LyX is stable and fully featured. It has been used for documents as large as a thesis, or as small as a business letter. Despite its simple GUI interface (available in many languages), it supports tables, figures, and hyperlinked cross-references, and has a best-of-breed math editor. What's New in This Release: [ read full changelog ] · This is the fifth maintenance release in the 1.6.x series. The release comes with many fixes and improvements. A number of newly reported crashes were fixed, new layouts and modules were included and some long-standing requests were implemented (e.g., a working LyX server on the Windows OS, finally enabling the communication with other applications such as JabRef on this platform as well). · All users and distributors are encouraged to upgrade to this version.

LaTeX easy development front end LyX is a WYSIWYM (what you see is what you mean) tool, frontend for LaTeX wnich allows users with no programming knowledge to get the full benefits of LaTeX.LyX differs from products such as TeTeX as one needs to know no code and can simply write and mark any text as a footnote of chapter heading etc., and then hit the PDF button to get a perfectly formatted output.LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing based on the structure of your documents, not their appearance. It is released under a Free Software / Open Source license.LyX is for people that write and want their writing to look great, right out of the box. No more endless tinkering with formatting details, 'finger painting' font attributes or futzing around with page boundaries. You just write. In the background, Prof. Knuth's legendary TeX typesetting engine makes you look good.On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output --or richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced -- looks like nothing else. Gone are the days of industrially bland .docs, all looking similarly not-quite-right, yet coming out unpredictably different on different printer drivers. Gone are the crashes 'eating' your dissertation the evening before going to press.LyX is stable and fully featured. It is a multi-platform, fully internationalized application running natively on Unix/Linux, the Macintosh and modern Windows platforms. Here are some key features of "LyX": · Graphical User Interface that gives access to all functions via menus and mouse, as well as configurable keybindings · Standard word processor operations, like cut/paste, multiple open documents, infinite undo/redo, spellchecking (uses ispell in the background) · Different textclasses allow you to type letters, articles, books, movie scripts, LinuxDoc, slides. Also included are some textclasses for scientific societies, such as AMS, APS, IEEE, or specific journals like Astronomy and Astrophysics. · Numbered section headings, table of contents (with hypertext functionality), nested lists (aka "outline mode") · Interactive WYSIWYG math editor · Support for writing documents in most European languages, as well as Right-to-Left languages like Hebrew and Arabic, including multi-lingual documents. · Postscript figures, with rotation, scaling, and captions · Interactive WYSIWYG tables · Footnotes and margin notes · Labels/references and bibliography (including BibTeX support) · Access to all LaTeX functionality with plain-latex-style · Import LaTeX. Export LaTeX, Postscript, DVI, ASCII, or send a fax · SGML-tools support (both LinuxDoc and DocBook DTDs) · Literate programming support, via the "noweb" tool. · Menus, error messages, and keybindings are available in many languages · Extensive documentation, including a beginner's tutorial. DOCUMENTATION AND LOCALIZATION: · Fix the compilation of the example file powerdot-example.lyx with recent versions of the LaTeX package powerdot. BUILD/INSTALLATION: · The internal boost libraries have been updated to version 1.40. Now LyX builds with gcc 4.4 without the need to use --without-included-boost. · Clarify that we require automake 1.8 (this was already the case, but nobody noticed). Accept autoconf 2.64 (bug 6352). · Fix buglet in configure script with recent bash versions. · The script ext_copy.py can now also copy files in subdirectories. (useful for external converters)
